No Frills Minis - More Customs from 4/20/13!

My previous post from the Custom division of this show covered the foals. Today's post will show some of my favorite entries from the balance of the custom division.

It is hard to believe that "Galileo" dates back to before 1995. He was customized by hobby icon Julie Froelich.  Julie was active in the hobby from the 1970's until the mid-1990's.  Julie's work was decades before it's time in just about every way.  She had a superb manner of using color in an "artistic" way, back when many artists were simply applying paint.  Julie's work is also known for the expressive facial detailing, dappling technique, and sheer realism.  Julie was extraordinarily versatile, in that she was able to paint every imaginable color and shade, as well as create extreme customs (then called "remakes") depicting virtually every breed.

Many of today's artists who were around back when Julie was creating models, including Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig and Tom Bainbridge, have cited Julie's work as having a profound impact on their own artistic development.  It was seeing Julie's work in the early 80's that set my own fire blazing with the desire to do what she was doing.  More work by Julie Froelich can be seen on her Model Horse Gallery page at http://www.modelhorsegallery.info/F/Froelich/JFhome.html .

This very fine piece is owned by Chris Wallbruch.

The next photo shows a beautiful Diane Capwell work.   While I may have mentioned this on this blog before, it is worth repeating that Diane's technique involved both applying paint as well as etching the paint that she had applied. It is unfortunate that Diane is no longer creating her beautiful work for the hobby.

I really enjoyed this buckskin-going-grey was customized by Tiffany Purdy.

This large “Little Bits” scale sculpture is produced by the company called "Collecta," and sculpted for them by our hobby's own Deborah McDermott.  These models are made of a slighly rubbery material and marketed as fairly inexpensive toys. I am personally pleased that Collecta commissioned such a talented sculptor and that they are producing such attractive “toys.”  Collecta sells this model as a solid black Friesian.  This gorgeous pinto by Tiffany Purdy really wowed me!

Elizabeth LaRose has recently acquired not one, but two 1990's era Sarah Minkiewicz customs. This wild-looking piece is the first of the two. I love his expression!

I love everything about this Breyer "Breeds of the World" sculpture customized by Tiffany Purdy, and pinned him with the Reserve Overall Grand in the Custom Division. I only wish I had photographed him from more angles to share here with you.

This is the more docile of the two 1990's era Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig customs recently acquired by Elizabeth LaRose. This is the piece that I pinned with the Overall Grand Championship in the Custom division at the No Frills All Minis Show.

There are still more photos coming from this show and others, so please check back again!
