Working with Reference Photos

One of the pieces I’m working on is a portrait of a real palomino with dappling all over, with extreme variation in the size, shape, distribution and intensity of the dapples. Due to the small size and dim lighting in the reference photo, the greatest challenge in reproducing the pattern is simply seeing the pattern that needs to be reproduced.  That brings me to today’s tip.
Printing or viewing your reference in greyscale is a wonderful trick that will help you to identify contours and answer other questions you may have about your reference while developing your work.

Most computers come with simple photo editing software that will permit you to print or view your reference in black and white. Just don’t forget to duplicate the original digital photo before you alter it.  You can gain further perspective on your reference by lightening, darkening or intensifying it digitally.

  2. It isn't Trillium, but I do know who the beautiful and famous Trillium is (I love Jennifer's blog)! This is a QH named Peaches. I should ask the piece's owner for more details about Peaches. I believe she knew this pretty girl 20 (or more) years back.
